What God Can Do with a Quilt and a Prayer

There are some quilts that are just quilts…and then there are the ones that carry prayers in every stitch.
Last year, my sweet friend walked through something no mother should have to endure. On Mother’s Day, of all days, she suffered a miscarriage. There aren’t neat or tidy words for that kind of heartbreak. It just sits heavy with grief.
In the months that followed, they tried again...and waited...and hoped... and wrestled through the quiet discouragement that comes when your prayers feel like they’re echoing instead of landing.
And because I love to quilt, I decided to make one for her.
But this one was different.
As I cut each piece and stitched each seam, I prayed. Simple prayers. Hope-filled prayers. The kind you whisper when you don’t have the right words but your heart is full anyway.
When I gave it to her, I laughed a little and told her I had nicknamed it “the baby maker.” I told her I had prayed over every inch of it...every stitch...every thread...that the Lord would bless them with a baby.
And wouldn’t you know it!
Not long after that, they conceived.

.
Now listen, I’m not out here claiming I’ve discovered some kind of quilt fertility treatment. But I do believe in a God who hears prayers...even the ones stitched into fabric.
So...maybe it wasn’t the quilt. But I’m also not not saying the quilt had something to do with it.
That sweet baby already has a quilt waiting, stitched together in the most beautiful greens and soft, warm oranges. It felt right to keep it unisex, since they’re waiting to be surprised, and somehow, that makes it all feel even sweeter after everything they’ve walked through.
And as I sewed that sweet baby quilt, I found myself praying again, this time with gratitude woven in.
Because sometimes, the Lord takes our deepest heartbreaks, and gently, faithfully, stitches together something new.
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." Psalm 139:13-14
